Au sud de la Nouvelle-Zélande, au milieu des montagnes de la Péninsule de Roy sur les rives du lac Wanaka, l’agence Stevens Lawson Architects a imaginé un lieu de villégiature pour des clients qui souhaitaient une maison confortable et conviviale pour accueillir famille et amis. Les géométries de triangles et les coupes origamiques rappellent le relief montagneux alentour. Une structure en béton bardée de cèdre a été choisie pour parer aux conditions météo extrêmes dans ce milieu naturel. Wanaka Retreat s’est vue décerner le prix de « New Zealand Home of the Year 2010″.
À propos : « The House is situated amongst the tussock-covered hills of Roy’s Peninsula on the shores of Lake Wanaka. Originally from the South Island, our clients split their time between homes in Auckland and Wanaka. Their brief asked for a generous and sociable home to accommodate their family and friends.
Triangulated geometries and origami-like cuts and folds create a sculptural form that relates to the mountainous landscape. The structure is pre-cast concrete, raw to the interior, with an external cedar rain-screen and roof, selected to weather into the natural environment.
The mass of the concrete and stone interior gives a sense of protection from the power of the landscape and the extreme climate. The building’s materiality is earthy and textured with natural finishes yet assembled with craft and precision. The primary pitched roof plane echoes the slope of the land, forming an sheltered verandah to the lake-front and a double-storey back section with garaging below and bedrooms above. The lifted triangular skylight allows natural light to penetrate into the living spaces throughout the day. The house is an exploration of the relationship between architecture and landscape and an investigation into regional difference ».
