En hommage à l’ampoule à incandescence d’Edison qui disparaitra définitivement du marché européen en 2012, le jeune designer hollandais Joost Wever a imaginé RISE AND SHINE : une série de trois suspensions composées d’un assemblage d’ampoules de formes diverses et au rendu très suggestif.
A few words by Joost Wever :
‘Rise and Shine’ is a tribute to the Edison lightbulb. Probably you know the traditional lightbulb is going to be forbidden to manufacture in the EU and though the new light in form of LED and Fluorrescent lamps have lots of possibilities and design opportunities the ‘old’ lights will be missed because of the natural (glow)light quality and it’s low price and low impact on the environment.
Fluorrescent lights contain quicksilver and use electronics to start and for the LED lamps you also need electronic parts to lower and transform the electricity. That makes the new lamps expensive to manufacture and they also use a lot more raw materials and are also expensive in a cradle to cradle path.
The traditional lightbulb is not toxic, uses less expensive materials and is easy to manufacture. The only point is that they use some more energy. From the led lights is said they last for 18 years, okay probably the LEDs but not the electronics to make it light up. So in the end the ban on the Edison lightbulb is more a marketing device to let people spend in my opinion.
So as a designer, this is a tribute to glowlight which is warm. »
RISE AND SHINE sera présentée pour la première fois à la Dutch Design Week du 23 au 31 octobre 2010 à Eindhoven.
